I heard this quote by Wayne Gretzky from a podcast featuring Ryan Burge and Carey Nieuwhof about the “Nones.” A religious category comprised of those who identify as religiously unaffiliated. Mapping a congregations trajectory is a combination of science, and God. Scores of research on Religion in America and particularly Christianity, are available to leadership and ministry teams. There is nothing barring congregations from acquiring the intelligence needed to make decisions around your church’s future that are grounded in wisdom. A hope that is not grounded in reality is not hope at all, it is a fantasy and the visionary fantasies that spring out of unrealities often results in disgruntled, confused and sometimes resentful congregations.
Religion in America is on the decline and there is no reason to think that trend will slow or reverse any time soon. While this statistic paints a dark, for some a depressing picture, it is only a piece of a much larger canvas. It is true that religion is on the decline.
